About

Marianna Grynchuk is an Australian pianist of Ukrainian origin. She was born into a musical family and began her musical studies with her mother at the age of 4. The family migrated to Australia when she was 8, where she continued her studies with acclaimed pedagogue Eleonora Sivan (of the Leningrad Conservatory) and Dr. Gabriella Smart. Marianna went on to pursue postgraduate studies at the Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneve in Switzerland, studying with Fabrizio Chiovetta and Paul Coker.

Marianna made her recital debut when she was 11, and has since frequently played in Adelaide’s leading venues, such as the main hall of the Elder Conservatorium (University of Adelaide), the Adelaide Town Hall and the Festival Theatre. She has performed solo in prestigious festivals around Australia – the Port Fairy Spring Music Festival (Victoria), Adelaide Fringe Festival, Soundstream New Music Festival (South Australia) and the Montville Young Musicians’ Festival (Queensland). Marianna has also given solo performances in Russia, USA, Italy, Ukraine and Switzerland. Recent performance highlights include solo and chamber recitals in festivals in Geneve and La Chaux-de-Fonds, as well as a series of concerts in Australia, featuring solo and concerti repertoire, as well as the Australian premiere of a new piano trio by French composer Lucas Debargue.

Her 2011 and 2014 Fringe Festival recitals were both sold out and she was one of three artists out of over 900, to be nominated for an Adelaide Critics Circle Best in Fringe Award. Marianna has also appeared as a soloist with the Norwood Symphony Orchestra, performing Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto. She returned to their concert series in 2016, with Mozart’s eloquent Piano Concerto No. 21. In 2019, Marianna is invited soloist in the Unley Symphony Orchestra's concert season, performing Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto.

Marianna has received tuition at the Moscow State Conservatory with Stanislav Igolinsky and in Europe with Gottlieb Wallisch, Peter Waas, Konstantin Scherbakov, Serguei Milstein and Eckart Heiligers. Masterclass appearances include performances for Yuri Rozum, JeanEfflam Bavouzet, Nikolai Demidenko, Alexander Braginsky, Louis Lortie and Mykola Suk.

Marianna is a graduate of the Elder Conservatorium, Adelaide (Bachelor of Music with Honours) and the Haute Ecole de Musique de Geneve (Masters in Music Interpretation) and the recipient of scholarships and grants from Recitals Australia, Elder Conservatorium, New York Keyboard Institute and Festival, Haute Ecole de Musique Geneve, Helpmann Academy and the PPCA of Australia. She has received the prize for the most promising pianist in South Australia seven times and was the winner of the 5MBS South Australian Young Performer of the Year in both 2012 and 2014. Marianna was also awarded the 2014 Adelaide Critics’ Circle Emerging Artist Award.

An active chamber musician, Marianna has collaborated with the Langbein String Quartet, Bresler String Quartet, Soundstream Collective, principal cellists Simon Cobcroft and David Sharp, acclaimed sopranos Emma Horwood and Alexandra Bollard. She also regularly performed with her brother, Maksym Grynchuk (trumpet).

In 2015, Marianna travelled to Academia Villa Bossi in Italy to record her debut solo CD ‘Travels’ for Sheva Collection. The CD was launched at the Carclew House, Adelaide in February 2016, as well as being released in Europe and online. In 2018, they collaborated again on a new solo CD, featuring sonatas by Mozart, Liszt and Scriabin. The CD was released in summer of 2019.

Marianna appears regularly as a soloist, associate artist and chamber musician in frequent recitals and concert series. Her performances have received critical acclaim and have been broadcast on 5MBS 99.9fm, Radio Adelaide and ABC Classic fm.

In addition to her performance career, Marianna has also maintained an active teaching practice since the age of 17, with many of her beginners now completing advanced grades and Diplomas, as well as receiving prizes and scholarships from the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society and the Australian Music Examination Board. She continues her teaching practice in Switzerland.

Media reviews

“Liszt’s Apres une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata (“Dante Sonata”), one of the piano repertoire’s most thunderous and titanic creations... Grynchuk delivered all its glories with sensational technique and fully magnified expression. She is a true Lisztian, and a pianist Adelaide must hear again on future occasions.”
